The Amazing Maurice and His Educated Rodents

The graphic novel, our diploma project at Vienna Higher Graphic School, is a collaboration with the artist/illustrator Fabian Zimmermann.

It is a tribute to Sir Terry Pratchett’s novel of the same name.

All steps of the working process remained analogue, until eventually it was printed as a digital print.

The illustrations were drawn with fineliner, aquarell colors and oil pastels, whereas the text was written with an old Mercedes typewriter.

“We are in the heart of the Dark Wood now… And we have found the Dark Wood in our hearts.
And… for tonight… we are something terrible.”

Every town on Discworld knows the stories about rats and pipers, and Maurice – a streetwise tomcat – leads a band of educated ratty friends (and a stupid kid) on a nice little earner. Piper plus rats equals lots and lots of money.

Until they run across someone playing a different tune.

Now he and his rats must learn a new concept: evil . . .
